Netflix narrowly missed out on making 2019 its most successful year of paid subscriber additions to date, despite a last gasp December surge. Global paid net subscriber adds totaled 27.83 million for 2019, compared to 28.62 million in 2018, after the SVoD royalty recorded 8.76 million new members in the fourth quarter. In fact, Netflix registered higher global streaming paid net additions in three out of four quarters in 2019 compared to the previous year. What stopped the company reaching new heights was the brutal nature of its infamous Q2 2019 slump which saw just 2.7 million global gains, as a result of a domestic banana skin that saw it lose 126,000 homegrown subscribers.
