Five years ago this week… Tencent snapped up SoftBank’s 84.3% stake in Finnish games firm Supercell for $8.6 billion, poising the former to be a world leader in online. This was an impressive flip from SoftBank, which had acquired 51% of Supercell, most famed for creating mobile hit Clash of Clans, for just $1.5 billion three years prior. Tencent had a history in PC gaming, but this was put on the back burner as WeChat rose to prominence.
