The launch of the Future of Television initiative at the 2023 NAB Show, as announced unceremoniously by FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, was applauded by the majority of attendees. Unfortunately, this is not the emergency ATSC 3.0 taskforce within the FCC that backers were demanding. It is a cop out; a feeble olive branch extended from the FCC to NAB members. The Future of TV initiative is a public-private awareness-gauging project. The FCC will support broadcasters and technology vendors invested in the NextGen TV ecosystem, to discuss with government and public interest stakeholders on the roadmap for the transition to the next-gen broadcast standard ATSC 3.0.
