Five years ago this week… French operator Canal+ booked a ticket for its video business on the Apple TV luxury yacht, offering its subscribers an Apple TV 4K device to rent for €6 ($7) a month, as an alternative to their traditional IPTV set tops. Canal+ was not offering any special service, but simply acting as a reseller of a connected device. DTH and DTT set tops in France remained undisturbed by this announcement, but Canal+ was now going after the lunch of French IPTV service providers – meaning potentially bad news for Free, Orange, Altice-SFR, Bouygues and their respective vendor suppliers.
