Verizon has gone further than most tier 1 telcos in promoting Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) as a significant contributor to ROI (Return On Investment) on 5G infrastructure deployments. Now the US operator is arguing that ROI will come more from savings achieved by retiring copper than incremental revenues from subscribers, even though the latter can also be a significant contributor to the bottom line. That message will resonate with many telcos around the world currently engaged in copper switch off, for which they may have considered fiber penetration to the home the only remedy.
