IP-house InterDigital, which licenses its patents in both the video and cellular world, has filed suit against device-maker Lenovo in the US, alleging the infringement of its AV1 and VP9 codec patents. Crucially, InterDigital is asserting non-standard essential patent rights, which means it does not have to abide by the usual FRAND terms.
