Since May this year, French operator Bouygues Telecom has been covertly testing multicast ABR technology among a subset of its video subscriber base. Impressed with results, showing a 94% decrease in delivered data volume, Bouygues has progressively turned the dial on multicast ABR – ramping up from a handful of channels to 30 “high-audience” TV channels in France by early 2024. Interestingly, this is not a set top deployment, but a smart TV deployment – which we understand is a first for Bouygues Telecom and on the the second of its kind for Broadpeak, the proprietor of this multicast ABR set-up via its nanoCDN product.
