Five years ago this week… French telco Orange unveiled its AI voice assistant Djingo in the hopes of reaching more users and devices – in a joint development with German operator Deutsche Telekom. Launch of the Djingo smart speaker was delayed by over a year to spring 2019, and offered integration with Amazon’s Alexa—in a bid to launch a multi-AI device ecosystem. However, Djingo arrived too late to the fray, lasting only a year before Orange decided to focus on growing the voice assistant on smart TV and other connected devices instead, killing Djingo as a smart speaker rival to Alexa.
