The US hybrid broadcast standard ATSC 3.0 has added support for VVC (Versatile Video Coding) – the H.266 MPEG compression standard shown to reduce bitrate requirements by up to 50% over HEVC – in a move designed to raise the appeal of ATSC 3.0 as a technology suited for international adoption. This is timely, with the Brazilian government – advised by the SBTVD Forum – currently in the testing process for the physical layer of the country’s forthcoming TV 3.0 hybrid broadcast IP delivery standard, in a two-horse race between ATSC 3.0 and Advanced ISDB-T (the pre-standard Japanese broadcast system).
