After monitoring the success of multi-codec licensing models, Access Advance—the proprietor of video codec patent pools—has launched a new venture, the Video Distribution Patent (VDP) Pool. Like the Avanci Video multi-codec pool (launched November 2023), Access Advance’s VDP is positioned as a one-stop shop license covering four of the most contemporary video codecs using for streaming video—HEVC, VVC, AV1, and VP9. The only technical difference is that VDP does not include non-codec standards like patents related to the MPEG-DASH software suite, whereas Avanci Video does.
