Faced with further erosion in traditional CDN revenue, Akamai is intent on fast-tracking its Delivery segment into profitability. A number of technology and business strategies are being implemented in 2024, including a pivot to charging Akamai clients a premium for higher-cost delivery destinations, while shedding less profitable traffic and effectively raising prices across the board for high-volume traffic customers. By the same token, Akamai is also actively in discussions with some “very large media companies” to offer discounted or free delivery of video traffic, in return for customers signing over a significant portion of their cloud computing workloads to Akamai’s Compute division.
