[Update: the week after this was published, the deal went through for $35 billion.] There’s no smoke without fire, and as neither party wants to speak to us, it does seem likely that AMD is about to purchase Xilinx for some $30 billion. The latest round of rumors, originating from the Wall Street Journal, reckon that the deal could be announced imminently, and if it goes through, it would be something of a final nail in the coffin for data center computing infrastructure. There has, however, been a stall in the discussions before, say these sources. It’s not impossible that these renewed talks fail, but AMD is on the up and looking to properly stake a claim in enterprise workloads.…
