AOMedia has taken baby steps to addressing the primary drawback of the group’s AV1 codec – the power consumption requirements which have earned it an almost infamous reputation, despite the visual quality increases and efficiency gains. The idea is to form the AOMedia Software Implementation Working Group (SIWG), using the Scalable Video Technology for AV1 (SVT-AV1) encoder to remove computational complexity trade-offs from AV1 encoder implementations. While AOMedia talks about exclusively using SVT-AV1, developed jointly by Intel and Netflix, we are inclined to believe that AOMedia members are also testing low complexity enhancement video coding (LCEVC) as a technology for lowering computational complexity in AV1.
