Pearl TV, the consortium of US broadcasters backing the ATSC 3.0 hybrid broadcast standard, has followed the ATSC’s orders by pushing High Dynamic Range (HDR) as the latest hook to convince local TV stations to hurry their hybrid switchovers, and thereby accelerate consumer uptake of NextGen TV devices. The ship of opportunity may have sailed for ATSC 3.0, but a summer of sports offers a lifebuoy. There is division in the camp, however, with Louisville-based TV station WAVE—an NBC affiliate—opting to deploy the Dolby Vision flavor of HDR, which comes after Advanced HDR by Technicolor was touted by Sinclair Broadcast Group at NAB 2024 back in April.
