ACM Mile High Video 2025 was refreshing for its technical depth, but was equally refreshing for its punchiness. Speakers in Denver last week adhered to short and sweet 10/15-minute presentations (some even <5 minutes)—leaving no room for lengthy panel sessions and zero appetite for stale sales pitches. Only a handful of longer 30-minute keynotes featured on the technical program, including one from Sharon Carmel, founder and CEO of Beamr, based around the crisply familiar question, “Is the future of video in GPU?” It was mostly a rhetorical question, because Beamr—a veteran of video compression software—is doubling down on Nvidia’s GPU ecosystem, convinced that the latest architectures are finally delivering the speed and efficiency once promised, but not realized (yet).
