The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has agreed on its UHD standards for sticking the extra-large files associated with 4K on physical media, and has named it Ultra-HD Blu-ray. The new discs will require new Blu-ray players, but the standard will include three types of High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology and support for HEVC (H.265) encoding. The HDR line-up includes techniques from the SMPTE in conjunction with Technicolor, Dolby and Philips. HDR allows a picture to display better contrast ratios (on supported hardware), which most experts in the field agree provides more noticeable benefits than the jump in resolution offered by 4K.
