Interoperability and quality testing are two related challenges of IP video production, especially for live services. The old certainties of SDI (Serial Digital Interface) with a one to one relationship between cable and content are gone, to be replaced by a pipe that may be carrying video alongside other forms of data. To make matters worse the goal posts keep changing and the pitch itself has undergone a major revision with the emergence of the SMPTE 2110 standard specifying carriage, synchronization, and description of separate so-called elementary essence streams over IP for real-time production, playout and associated media applications.
