CDNs have come a long way since Akamai kicked the field off in 1999 but the basic objectives of saving bandwidth and boosting performance are still the same. The aim 20 years ago was to load static web pages comprising largely text with a few still images more quickly in an Internet where low speed dial up access was still common, and DSL was still in the labs.
