More than two years since Faultline first introduced MPAI (Moving Picture, Audio and Data Coding by Artificial Intelligence) to readers, the non-profit standards development group has updated us exclusively on the status of several AI-based standards – including neural network watermarking and, of course, video coding. We say of course because MPAI is the baby of Leonardo Chiariglione, the enigmatic electrical engineer and MPEG mastermind who, back in 2020, was unceremoniously forced out of the video codec standards group he co-founded and served as Chairman for 32 years.
