Media over QUIC (MoQ)—the modern transport protocol originating inside Google as a faster and more efficient means for delivering web traffic—is at an inflection point, much earlier than planned. One of the key contributors to the development of MoQ, Luke Curley, a software engineer at Discord, has thrown in the towel as far as work goes on the IETF standardization of MoQ—in development since 2022. Curley’s commitments will now be diverted to a MoQ fork, leaving the MoQ working group to pick up the “official” standards process for the protocol, which in the long-term seeks to replace WebRTC.
