Apple’s proposed $400 million acquisition of song recognition app Shazam is being justly investigated by the European Commission’s antitrust watchdog. There’s no doubt Apple will feast on Spotify user data through Shazam to lure music streamers over to Apple Music, although Apple’s response to the EC might go something along the lines of: “Well, how come you allowed Facebook to buy Instagram AND WhatsApp?” While Facebook has been more than careless with data juggling, the premise was for driving ad revenues, ultimately not with intent to stifle social media competition in the market.
