Days before the 2024 NAB Show opened its doors, Akamai’s legal counsel met with the FCC to voice concerns about potential implications on CDNs due to gaps in the legislation for net neutrality – set to be reinstated in the US following today’s vote. Akamai has urged the Commission to reaffirm its conclusion from the 2015 Open Internet Order which stipulates that an ISP agreement with a CDN to store content locally within the ISP network does NOT constitute paid prioritization. Under the current Draft Order, it does state that CDNs are outside the scope of broadband internet access service, but Akamai’s lawyers have evidently spotted a worrying hole.
