A tie up this week announced between Lucent and Telefonica does much to change the IPTV global landscape. In one step it provides Lucent with a credible IPTV installation base and a future revenue stream, it also moves it from solely supporting Orca’s middleware product into productizing the existing home written Imagenio Telefonica middleware suite. Given that Lucent will handle all aspects of IPTV, including equipment supply, services, installation and software provision, this deal is likely to end up even larger and more significant than the Alcatel deal at AT&T in the US.
