A panel session from NAB 2023 saw members of the Alliance for Open Media (AOM) discuss the latest in AV1 readiness. One takeaway is that AV1 is not ready for live streaming, with Netflix’s representative, Anne Aaron, Director of Encoding Technologies, refusing to comment on which codecs Netflix has employed for its recent live streaming escapades. Netflix’s Aaron did reveal that approximately 30% of Netflix’s catalog is encoded in AV1 today – notching up support on mobile, browsers, and most recently TVs.
