Colorization is as old as film itself dating back well over a century to the dawn of silent movies, usually then just as a special effect. It was highly laborious and performed by individuals, so naturally computers were recruited as soon as that became practical in the 1970s but still it was only to assist humans. Use cases now included not just converting movies originally filmed in black and white but also to restore quality of color content including TV shows where the quality had deteriorated through ageing of the film medium.
