Five years ago this week… Quantenna was acquired for $1.1 billion from surprise buyer ON Semiconductor (onsemi), which we primarily associated with IoT-focused designs and low-power Bluetooth SoCs. Instead of Broadcom, Qualcomm and Marvell, onsemi saw the value of Quantenna, with a customer list including some of the world’s largest operators. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) was arguably the hottest topic in WiFi at the time, with expectations set high, along with mesh networking.
