Five years ago this week… Deutsche Telekom was trying in vain to compel the European Commission to overturn the contentious sale of Liberty Global’s Unitymedia to Vodafone in Germany – a deal which handed Vodafone 80% control of the cable market practically overnight. As Deutsche Telekom turned its focus in mid-2019 to developing convergent offerings around MagentaTV and fiber broadband, the German operator was also celebrating a recent decision by regulators to lift the bandwidth limit on StreamOn, its zero-rating mobile-video streaming service. Less than three years later, in April 2022, Germany’s Federal Network Agency banned DT’s StreamOn, along with other zero-rated mobile tariffs including Vodafone’s Pass.
