Five years ago this week… Faultline was at Cable Congress in Berlin, where Liberty Global bosses led the unveiling of the GIGAEurope trade association. The rebrand was designed to help Vodafone, which at the time had just acquired Liberty’s cable assets in Germany to become the country’s largest gigabit-capable network operator, to promote its GigaTV service as Liberty’s Horizon TV was being phased out. Ultimately, the group was positioned to push back against the incumbent Deutsche Telekom, and sought to put increased pressure on policymakers. However, five years later, GIGAEurope hasn’t achieved the sweeping influence that Liberty Global and Vodafone initially envisioned, and the initiative has largely faded from outside of policy circles.
