Non-profit organization the WiFi Alliance has rebranded the standard, aiming to make it easier for device manufacturers and users – with the numerical system representing significant developments in WiFi technology. It also applies to previous generations, with WiFi 5 used for devices supporting 802.11ac and WiFi 4 for those supporting 802.11n.
