Five years ago this week… US modulation scheme inventor MagnaCom had a major mathematical breakthrough, applying its revolutionary WAM (Wave Modulation) encoding to WiFi receivers. If this was to be incorporated into the next standard, WiFi looked set to become the globally dominant network if cellular failed to wake up in time. WAM worked similarly to a 3D QAM constellation, which allows greater inter-symbol distances in a wave form. In simple terms, it meant that signals could cope with a high signal to noise ratio, and dense data signals could survive interference.
