Five years ago this week… Verizon belligerently ignored net neutrality by offering sponsored data. The US telco announced that customers would not fill up their data caps by streaming its Go90 OTT video service, which was later shut down in 2018. This was a direct response to other US operators subsidising mobile data with broadband for certain video sources – think T-Mobile’s Binge On service and Comcast’s Stream OTT product. Verizon was only offering free video traffic if it owned the content, or if the content owner would pay for its delivery – a clear breach of the FCC’s now forlorn Title II imposition (which the industry is expecting to be restored under a new administration). — Netflix…
