While it was never in doubt that the FCC would approve WiFi’s expansion into unlicensed spectrum, what was surprising was the unanimous way in which it happened, with commissioners voting 5-0 in favor of the biggest WiFi upgrade since 1989. Without question, lockdowns were party to the clean sheet – convincing commissioners that WiFi has much more to give. So, later this year, WiFi will be officially set free into the 6 GHz mid-band field, with 1,200 MHz of spectrum to play with.
