Netflix is celebrating two years of being in the advertising business, 25 years after founder Reed Hastings famously declared Netflix would never host ads. At this 24-month milestone, the SVoD (and now live streaming) platform has reached 70 million monthly active users of the Netflix with Ads tier, and rising fast – with a little over 50% of new Netflix sign-ups opting for the ad-supported plan in the 12 countries where it is available. A word of warning though, because there are suspicions that Netflix’s ‘active users’ on the ad-supported plan is actually counting the active number of Netflix profiles, rather than the total number of accounts, which is how it measures total paid subscribers.
