WiFi looks set to incorporate mmWave line of sight indoor transmission in its next release 8, due out around 2026, although with surprising lack of clarity over technical details. There have been few further revelations since publication of a paper in September 2023 entitled ‘Wi-Fi 8: Embracing the Millimeter-Wave Era’, which seemed to mix technical detail with aspiration. It looks like WiFi 8 will continue in the mold of recent releases in delivering what should have come out in the previous release, and in forever playing catch-up with cellular over more advanced capabilities.
