Five years ago this week… Rumours were spreading that Netflix was set to enter China, through partnership with the Wanda Group, owners of the largest cinema chain in China. This would have sparked a fierce war for Chinese viewers with the incumbents Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu. Netflix’s easiest route to market was through partnerships, as Chinese regulations required it to hold eight licenses to provide OTT content, and it was unlikely these licenses would be bestowed to a foreign – let alone American – company. But Wanda’s business (commercial property and e-commerce) suggested that perhaps it did not own these licenses, and instead Netflix was looking to enter China as a producer.
